- For my topic of inquiry for this class i have thought that i would like to do something a long the same lines as my action research project. I would like to examine the effects of background music playing while the students are reading and how it effects their memory retention. There are many theories out there that listening to soft music while students complete tasks such as reading and test/quizzes helps with student concentration and retention.
- I am going to be doing this project by myself since it is the same thing I'm doing for my action research.
- Looking at reading in a history class, now i understand that students need to come from the perspective that they are a historian. They are expected to know the vocabulary like a historian would and use the vocabulary the same way. They need to read and examine the documents, books and sources they read and need to ask the questions like "Who said this?", "Where did they get their information from". Because as historians establishing fact from rumor is very important to our discipline.

History and Mozart

I think that your topic and your AR topic in general are very interesting. For years there has been debate over music and its effects in education. I think that your passion for music definitely makes you the right person for this research also! I am interested to see the results of your literacy research because I would love to know if music helps increase reading comprehension. As much as our students love to listen to their ipods or just have any music playing at all times, I think it would be nice to know if this helps them educationally. If so, it might be something worth implementing into all our classrooms!
ReplyDeleteI am excited to see what you learn about this topic. I have heard for a long time that classcal music is beneficial to the learning environment. I also think that you are absolutely correct that the students should approach their history class like historians. If they can learn to analyze text in different classrooms in various ways, then I feel like we are moving in the right direction! Keep us posted on what you learn about music and if you think that it is really helpful. I look foward to hearing more!
ReplyDeleteI think that having background music in the classroom will create a much more "relaxed" environment. My only concern would be what if the students don't do their reading/work because they are making fun of the music. I hope you don't have any problems with this, but it should be considered that most of the students will never have heard any of the music you are talking about playing and might become either more engaged in the music, or just talk about how "stupid" the music is. If you could somehow play music from the time-period you are studying that might have a more positive effect on the students. The students would then get a better sense of what it was like in that time period. (I know this would be alot harded for the Greek and Roman times, but maybe play some soundtrack music from Gladiator or movies like that even).
